This Week in History ~ 100 years ago (1924): “Cow Creek School and all the furniture and books in the building were destroyed by fire between nine and ten o’clock Monday night.”
The article which ran in the March 6, 1924 Bonners Ferry Herald continued: “The origin of the fire is unknown. The loss is estimated at between $3,000 and $4,000 and insurance in the sum of $2,100 was carried on the building and contents. The trustees of the school district have made arrangements to secure a building for school purposes and school will be resumed again Monday. Seventeen pupils attend the Cow Creek school, of which Mrs. Robert Lowery is the teacher. Plans will be decided upon at once for the construction of a new school house.”
In Cow Creek, a small log schoolhouse was built in 1896 on land donated by Thomas Desmond. The wooden schoolhouse, in this photograph, was built in 1904 next to the log school. It burned in 1924.
