On September 20 1974 the 67 members of the Kootenai Nation in Boundary County Idaho declared war on the United States. To finance the 3-day war members of the tribe manned two toll stations on Highways 95 and 2; a 10 cent toll was charged. The Kootenai Tribe also sold War Bonds for $1 each. Several Kootenai War Bonds were sold during the Expo ’74: Spokane’s World’s Fair. Chairman Amy Trice stated “$7000 was raised” for the war effort.
For American Heritage Month the film “Idaho’s Forgotten War” will be shown on Friday November 15th at 6:00 pm in Portrait Hall at the Boundary County Museum. Sponsored by the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho and the Boundary County Human Rights Task Force the program will also feature a Q&A with Kootenai Tribal Chairman Gary Aiken Jr. Admission is free to the public.
