Today’s Tale  ~  Been doing some research for a steamboat historian from Canada. He asked what we knew about the SS Klondike running on the Kootenai River. We talked it over in the research room, and none of us had heard of the Klondike.

We looked through files and photos to find nothing. I did a quick search of the Kootenai Herald (digitized copies through Library of Congress) and got three hits in the April 8 & 22 and May 27, 1899 papers.

The man then told me years ago he had seen a photo of her at the Museum. He told me she was in the photo with the SS Alberta near the KV Railway bridge. I looked at the photo and only saw the SS Alberta, until I zoomed in on the tug and barge in the lower corner. Look! The tug is named the SS Klondike! What a surprise!
