Today’s Tale ~ 100 years ago today, Stephen Douglas (S.D.) Taylor passed away. Born on February 3, 1863, S.D. aspired to be a newspaper man. At the age of 27, he started The Kootenai Herald in the town of Kootenai between Sand Point and Fry, Idaho. In 1891, S.D moved his newspaper operation to Eatonville, Idaho on the south bank of the Ko
otenai River. He published The Kootenai Herald until 1905, at which time he renamed the newspaper, The Bonners Ferry Herald – after the town where it is still
published today.
Many of the hours spent on research in the Museum involve the newspapers in the archives. What a treasure trove the newspapers have been.

The home S.D. had built on Cottage Avenue (Ash Street) in 1893. It was later owned by Dr. E.E. Fry and the Chervenell family. It burned to the ground in 1989.
